Catching, Hatching, and Holding Butterflies!

~Catch-up posts~
This process has been amazing for me... I don't know where I was as a kid, but 5 miles away from me was a boy named Ted, and this boy was catching caterpillars and hatching butterflies.  Thankfully, I met this same Ted and now he and his "bug" ways are mine...well at least I get to be a part of his "buggy" ways, but he is mine!  So, here is our family's first time catching Monarch caterpillars and hatching them.  Really, it was a dream come true for me.  I actually got to hold a beautiful, sweet, delicate, amazing butterfly (YEA!).

Here Chloe is showing off her little caterpillar.

This is what they do as they turn into the chrysalis.

Here the caterpillar has wiggled out of it's skin (the black) and then kind-of gloss over to make the chrysalis.

After about 10 days the chrysalis changes to this.  This is when you can wait and watch to see the butterfly come out!  Unfortunately, at this time I usually get distracted by whatever is going on and miss it...

TA-DUH !!!  BUTTERFLIES!

That is so much fun!!! We caught a caterpillar about a month ago, but it turned out to be one that turns into a moth in the spring. Noah was bummed that he couldn't see it go into a cocoon. Good times :).

Jealousy, thy name is Richardson. Uh! We looked for forever to find monarch catarpillars but no dice. Poor Aliyah, every time we'd tell her we were going out to catch catarpillars and just get bit by mosquitos again. Next year you must share your secrets of success!
